Five teams of students, each supervised by a faculty member, has spent the semester working on a variety of problems facing today's journalism world. Like so many issues in media, the issues are complicated. A series of lectures, site visits and a good working relationship with our entrepreneurs has produced some surprising recommendations. The students, the entrepreneurs and faculty will present their findings at the annual Center for the Digital Globe symposium on Friday, April 27, in the Fred W. Smith forum at the Reynolds Journalism Institute. The presentations will be graded by a panel of judges from around the country. The course was envisioned by Randall Smith, the first Donald W. Reynolds Chair in Business Journalism, and Ton Stam, the Leggett & Platt Distinguished Professor of MIS. The course is co-taught in the business and journalism schools, and students from each of the disciplines are on the teams. In addition, a distinguished group of journalism/business professors is mentoring each team and teaching segments of the course. See the RJI events web page for details on their challenges: Associated Press, Community Publishers, Missouri Business Insider, Clear Health Costs, Harvest Media
2:30–3:45 p.m.: Gerald M. Boyd Lecture Series: The media, politics and the economy: Are the industry's shrinking resources distracted by campaign posturing at the expense of addressing the fundamental issues facing America? Orlando Sentinel Editor Mark Russell will moderate a panel discussion with Major Garrett, White House correspondent for National Journal; Jake Wagman, political reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; Darrel Rowland, public affairs editor of the Columbus (OH) Dispatch; and Rochelle Riley, a columnist at the Detroit Free Press.
